ദിവസങ്ങളോളം ഗുരുവായൂരപ്പന്റെ ഒരു ദര്ശനത്തിനായി ഗോപുര വാതില്ക്കല് കാത്തിരുന്ന പെപിതാ സേത്തിനു മുമ്പില് ക്ഷേത്രാധികാരികളുടെ വിലക്ക് വെണ്ണപോലുരുകി ഇല്ലാതെയായ കഥ. ഒരു വിദേശ വനിതയുടെ നിഷ്കാമമായ, അചഞ്ചലമായ ഭക്തിക്കു മുമ്പില് ക്ഷേത്രാചാരങ്ങള് തിരുത്തി എഴുതപ്പെട്ട കഥ കാര്യസാധ്യങ്ങള്ക്കായി മാത്രമായി ഭഗവദ് ദര്ശനം കാംക്ഷിക്കുന്ന നമ്മള് ഓരോത്തരും അറിഞ്ഞിരിക്കേണ്ട ഒരു ജീവിത കഥ!
ക്ഷേത്രത്തെക്കുറിച്ച്,ക്ഷേത്രാചാരനുഷ്ടാനങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച്, ഐതീഹ്യത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് ഒക്കെ നീണ്ട ഏഴു വര്ഷങ്ങള് ഗവേഷണം നടത്തിയ ശേഷം ‘Heaven on Earth: The Universe of Kerala’s Guruvayur Temple’. എന്ന പുസ്തകം അവര് എഴുതി.ഭൂമിയിലെ സ്വര്ഗ്ഗാന്വേഷികളെ നിങ്ങള് ഗുരുവായൂരിലെത്തിയാല് നിങ്ങളുടെ അന്വേഷണം നിര്ത്തിയേക്കൂ, ഭൂമിയിലൊരു സ്വര്ഗ്ഗമുണ്ടെങ്കില് അതിതാണ് ,ഈ സ്വര്ഗ്ഗത്തിലെത്തിയാല് പിന്നെ നിങ്ങള്ക്ക് മറ്റൊരിടത്തേക്ക് ഒരു മടക്കം ഒരിക്കലും ചിന്തിക്കുവാന് പോലും സാധിക്കില്ല” എന്ന് ഉള്നിറഞ്ഞ് ലോകത്തിനോട് ഉദ്ഘോഷിച്ച ഈ ഇംഗ്ലീഷുകാരി ,ഗുരുവായൂരപ്പെന്റെ ദര്ശന സൌഭാഗ്യം നിഷേധിക്കപ്പെട്ടവര്ക്ക് അനികരണീയമായ ഒരു മാതൃകയാണ്!
ഒരു ഫോട്ടോഗ്രാഫറും,ചലച്ചിത്ര നിര്മ്മാതാവുമായ പെപിതാ സേത്തിന് ഇന്ത്യയോടുള്ള അഭിനിവേശം തുടങ്ങുന്നത് ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് സൈന്യത്തില് അംഗമായിരുന്ന മുത്തച്ഛന് ഇന്ത്യയെക്കുറിച്ചെഴുതിയ ഡയറിക്കുറിപ്പുകള് വായിക്കുന്നതോടെയാണ് .അങ്ങനെ അവര് 1970ല് 27-ാം വയസ്സില് കൊല്ക്കത്തയിലെത്തി,പിന്നീട് ആനകളോടുള്ള കമ്പം,കേരളത്തിന്റെ ഗ്രാമഭംഗി,നാടന് കലകള്,ഇതെല്ലാം അവരെ കേരളത്തോടും,കേരളത്തിലെ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളോടും കൂടുതല് അടുപ്പിച്ചു. അങ്ങനെ കേരളത്തിലെത്തി, തെയ്യത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് നിരവധിഗവേഷങ്ങള് നടത്തി,1994ല് ‘The Spirit Land എന്ന പുസ്തകം എഴുതി.തെയ്യത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് ആധികാരികമായ വസ്തുതകള് അടങ്ങിയ ഒരു പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ പണിപ്പുരയിലാണ്.
ഗുരുവായൂരിലെത്തിയ ശേഷം അവര് ആദ്യം എടുത്ത ഗുരുവായൂര് കേശവന്റെ ചിത്രമാണ് ഇന്നും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനു മുമ്പില് ഭക്തരെ സ്വാഗതം ചെയ്യുന്നത് . ഭഗവാന്റെ അവതാമായി കണ്ട്,ഭക്തര് കണ്ട് ആരാധിച്ചിരുന്നു ഗുരുവായൂര് കേശവന് 1976 ല് ഗുരുവായൂര് കേശവന് ചരിഞ്ഞപ്പോള് ജനങ്ങള് പൊട്ടിക്കരഞ്ഞതും,റേഡിയോ സ്റ്റേഷനുകള് ദു:ഖമാചരിച്ചതും, പത്രങ്ങള് കറുത്ത ബോര്ഡറുകള് വച്ച് വലിയ വാര്ത്തയായി അതു പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചതും എല്ലാം അത്ഭുതത്തോടെ അതിലുപരി ഭക്തിയോടെ ഓര്ക്കുന്നു!ആര്യസമാജത്തില് നിന്നും അനുമതിപത്രം വാങ്ങി കേരളത്തിലെ പ്രമുഖ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളെല്ലാം സന്ദര്ശിച്ച പെപിതാ സേത്ത് കേരളത്തില് വരാനായത് തന്റെ മുജ്ജന്മ സുകൃതമായി കരുതുന്നു!
215 വര്ണ്ണചിത്രങ്ങള് അടങ്ങിയ ഹെവന് ഓണ് എര്ത്ത് എന്ന പുസ്തകം ക്ഷേതത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് രചിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങളില് വളരെ ആധികാരികം എന്നു വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടാവുന്ന ഒന്നാണ്. വര്ഷങ്ങളായി കേരളത്തില് ജീവിക്കുന്ന പെപിതയ്ക്ക് കഴിഞ്ഞ വര്ഷം ഭാരത സര്ക്കാര് പദ്മശ്രീ നല്കി ആദരിച്ചു.
തൃശ്ശൂരിൽ വര്ഷങ്ങളായി ജീവിക്കുന്ന,കേരളത്തിലെ ക്ഷേത്രാചാരങ്ങളെയും അനുഷ്ഠാനകലകളെയും കുറിച്ച് പഠിക്കാനും എഴുതാനും ജീവിതം ഉഴിഞ്ഞുവെച്ച പെപിതാ സേത്ത് എന്ന അനുഗ്രഹീതയായ ഈ ഗുരുവായൂരപ്പ ഭക്തയ്ക്ക് ഭഗവദ് കടാക്ഷങ്ങള് ,അനുഗ്രഹങ്ങള് ഇനിയുമിനിയുമുണ്ടാകട്ടെ എന്നു പ്രാര്ത്ഥിക്കുന്നു.!!
A special remembrance event is held every year to commemorate Guruvayur Kesavan, a gentle and friendly elephant, who served Guruvayurappan (Lord krishna of Guruvayur, Kerala) for quite a long period. Majestic physical features, including 3.2m height, and noble behaviour had elevated Kesavan to the status of a legend in his lifetime itself. Around forty elephants groomed by the temple are lined upbefore a life-size statue of Kesavan to pay tribute to their great predecessor annually.
London-born author-photographer Pepitha Seth's photographs of Guruvayoor Kesavan) made her famous. One can see those photographs before entering the Nalambalam of Guruvayoor temple. She shared a special connection with Guruvayoor Kesavan.
Her first picture was that of Kesavan. “Oh, he was not an animal. I still remember the look he gave me as I positioned my camera… it was divine, as though he sensed that it was the beginning of my bond with the temple,” Pepita exclaims. It was indeed a defining moment. The temple consumed her, with Pepita spending long hours watching the activities, the rituals, everything connected to the temple that attracts devotees across the country and the globe. This led to the decision to document everything.
It is a rich world that Pepita’s book “Heaven on Earth: The Universe of Kerala's Guruvayur Temple”, immersed in spirit and in respect for faith, gives us the opportunity to enter. There is opulence in it, but also quietude, despite all the noises that one can almost hear in the photographs and the descriptions. And there is much in it that is moving. The account, for instance, of the great elephant, Kesavan, the First Servant of the Lord, who, left behind once because of his old age and infirm body, broke his chains and rushed into the temple, as if insisting upon retaining, till his very end, the privilege of carrying the Lord on his back.
It is a book made possible both by the trust and willingness of people, including the temple priests, to share their knowledge, and byPepita Seth’s commitment to the project and her determination to represent the scope of the temple’s world.
One example is 'velichapad' which is normally translated imperfectly as oracle. Seth has translated it as "one who brings light". Such care and attention to minor details is an attribute of a continental mind.
