Sriman Narayaneeyam is a beautiful Sanskrit kaavyam काव्यम् of 1034 verses constructed in various meters. Ardent devotees of Lord Krishna of Guruvayur read this devotional work again and again to enjoy its narration and literary style. This work was created by a 16thcentury Kerala scholar-saint by the name of Sri Narayana Bhattatiripad (श्री नारायण भट्टत्रिपाद). He has used his vast scholarship to condense the contents of the epic Srimad Bhagavata Mahapuranam. To abridge the contents of Srimad Bhagavata Mahapuranam that has some 13,500 verses into a literary masterpiece of just 1034 verses called Sriman Narayaneeyam is certainly no small feat. Lord Krishna’s Grace was on the poet and every verse reveals it.
It is said that Sri Narayana Bhattatiripad (श्री नारायण भट्टत्रिपाद) composed this kavyam (काव्यम्) in the Presence of Lord Sri Krishna of Guruvayur (गुरुवायूर्), LORD GURUVAAYURAPPAN (गुरुवायूरप्पन्), in Guruvayur temple. It is also said that he narrated about 10 verses each day for 100 days. Each such group of ten verses is contained in a dasakam (दशकम्) . A few dasakams have more than ten verses, thus making a total of 1034 verses in 100 dasakams.
It is also said that the clue to know the day when he chanted the final dasakam of Sriman Narayaneeyam , i.e., the one hundredth day, was imbedded in the concluding word of the last verse.
That word is: आयुरारोग्यसौख्यम् - aayuraarogyasaukhyam. Using (कटपयादि संख्या) katapayaadi protocol, this word translates to the number 1712210. Scholars think that this meant the work was completed on the 1712210th day of kaliyuga (कलियुग). Also, astrologers and scholars worked this out to conclude that that day was the 28th day of the month of Vrischkam (वॄश्छिकम्) of the Kollam Era year 762.
I wanted to find out the corresponding date per Gregorian calendar and also the tithi, vaaram and nakshatram (तिथि, वार, नक्षत्र) corresponding to 762 Kollam, Vrischikam 28th. This may help us to celebrate Sriman Narayaneeyam Day each year.
Kollam 762, Vrischikam 28th corresponds to Sunday, December 14, 1586. It was SUKLA CHATURTHI, and the star was SRAVANAM (श्रवणम् - திருவோணம்). The Tamil year was called (விய) VIYA and the month KARTIKAI. Counting 100 days back to determine when Sri Bhattatiri might have started his work, we find the starting day to be September 6, 1586. That day was: Kollam 762, Simha maasam, 21st. That day happened to be SRI KRISHNA JANMASHTAMI DAY, and the star was ROHINI and the day was Saturday. The Tamil month was AVANI.
Therefore there are a few ways one may observe the SRIMAN NARAYANEEYAM DAY.
1. Celebrate the 100th day counting from Sri Krishna Janmashtami day each year as SRIMAN NARAYANEEYAM DAY.
2. Celebrate Vricchika maasa Sukla Chaturthi as NARAYANEEYAM DAY.
3. Celebrate Vricchika maasa Sravana nakshatram as NARAYANEEYAM DAY.
4. Celebrate Vricchika maasa 28th day as NARAYANEEYAM DAY. (This is done in Guruvayur Temple.
5. Celebrate December 14th each year as NARAYANEEYAM DAY.
I think that number 1 above makes better sense to commemorate SRIMAN NARAYANEEYAM DAY every year.
Perhaps devotees of Lord Guruvayurappan may wish to begin their parayanam (पारायणम्) of Sriman Narayanaeeyam on the Krishna Janmashtami Day every year; read one dasakam a day and conclude the parayanam पारायणम् on the NARAYANEEYAM DAY.

USE OF KATAPAYAADI BY HINDUS AN EARLY FORM OF HASHING ALGORITHMORM
KATAPAYAADI SYSTEM OF WRITING NUMERALS
Friends,
All of you know about the Famous work "NARAYANEEYAM" (नारायणीयम) written by Brahmashri. Narayana Bhattathirippad. But only few of us who have read this famous condensed Bhagavatham know that it was completed by him in Malayalam KOLLAM ERA 762, in the month of VRISCHIKA and on the 28th day which is on a SUNDAY with the constellation SWATHI. This we came to know from the last verse in chapter 100 where in it is written as "AYURAAROGHYASOUKHYAM" in sanskrit " आयुरारोग्यसोउख्यं " which denotes the KALI DAY ( कलिदिनं) as 1712210, on which it was completed as per कटपयादि ( KATAPAYAADI ) . Of course, many of us have heard and some of us might have even used this method but I am sure many among us do not know what is KATAPAYAADI method. I am not an expert in this line, but to the best of my knowledge and ability for those who do not know what is this कटपयादि, (കടപയാദി), I am explainig hereunder :-
For the Number "1" क(ക),ट(ട), प (പ) or य(യ) is used.
For "2" ख (ഖ), ठ (ഠ) , फ (ഫ) or र (ര) is used
For "3" ग (ഗ), ड (ഡ) , ब (ബ) or ल (ല)is used
For "4" घ (ഘ), ढ (ഢ), भ (ഭ) or व (വ) is used
For "5" ङ (ങ), ण (ണ), म (മ) or श (ശ ) is used
for "6" च (ച ),त (ത )or ष(ഷ) is used
For "7" छ (ഛ), थ (ഥ ) or स (സ) is used
For "8" ज (ജ ), द (ദ )or ह (ഹ ) is used.
For "9" झ (ഝ )or ध (ധ ) is used
and for writing "0" ञ (ഞ ) or न (ന) is used
ALL Vovels as "अ" or " ऋ " are to be treated as " O" also ळ (ള)is yo be treated as "0"
In case of conjunct consonants the last letter is to be taken . For example in letter ख्य (ഖ്യ) the last syllable which forms ख्य(ഖ്യ)= ഖ്+യ (ख्+य ) denotes 1.
Decimals cannot be written in KATAPAYAADI
" अङ्कनां वामथो गति" while reading numerals Indo-Arab system is to be used (i.e.) Increse the place value from Right to left.
Now, I shall take you back to " आयुरारोग्यसौख्यम् " आ = 0, यु =1,रा = 2, रो =2, ग्य =1, सौ = 7, ख्यं =1. Total 1712210.
Hence the KALIDINA OR KALISAMKYA is 1712210. This is how we came to know the Date on which our Great Work "NARAYANEEYAM" was completed.
Friends, To the best of my knowledge and ability, I have explained how we developed this ALGORITHM. Perhaps this our " कटपयादि* method must be the world's oldest system of HASHING ALGORITHM.
